Why fit a burglar alarm?

Most criminals would much rather target a home or business that is not protected by a burglar alarm. Furthermore, Government statistics have shown that the majority of burglaries carried out on homes fitted with burglar alarms are unsuccessful. This suggests that burglar alarms are an excellent form of protection and a deterrent for prospective criminals.

Here are just a few examples taken from the Thames Valley Police Web Site:

Attempted burglary - Amersham
"Police are appealing for witnesses following an attempted burglary in Beechwood Avenue, Amersham.
The incident happened between 2pm and 7.15pm on Friday (11/11). The offenders attempted to gain entry by smashing two windows at the rear of the house. The alarm was activated and the offenders made off empty handed. "

Burglary - Little Chalfont
"Police are appealing for witnesses following a burglary at a house in Little Chalfont.
A man was seen to leave the house in Church Grove after the burglar alarm had gone off just after 3.15pm on Thursday 9 June.
On investigation a rear window of the house had been smashed, but nothing was taken. "

Attempted Burglary – Chalfont St Peter
"Police are appealing for witnesses following an attempted burglary in Chalfont St Peter.
Offenders forced the front door of a house in Deadhearn Lane, some time between 6pm and 6.30pm on Saturday (23/04). This caused the home security alarm to activate and the offenders fled the scene without stealing anything. "

Having a Professionally installed Burglar alarm or CCTV System installed is an excellent deterrent, however, here are a few other simple precautions homeowners can take which can greatly reduce the risk of becoming a burglary victim, for example:

  • Most burglars are opportunists. Make sure all windows and doors are closed and locked before you leave
  • Operate a timer switch for lights and a radio if you are going out for the night
  • Make sure no ladders or other equipment are within view or easy reach that could help burglars break in
  • Safely lock away your jewellery, and don’t leave cash in the house
  • Keep financial documents and any keys hidden away
  • If you have an alarm, don’t forget to set it, and give your monitoring station or police details of the key holder
  • Ask a neighbour to keep an eye on your home if you are going away. Ask them to collect your mail or push it through the letter box for example. If they are looking after your pets or watering your plants, ask them to open and close curtains and switch on lights to make the house look occupied. Also ask them to park on your drive if you have taken your car.

There are many systems on the market, ranging from cheaper DIY alarms to sophisticated systems costing hundreds of pounds. Easily installable wire-free alarms are now available whereby sensors fitted around the house transmit radio detection signals to a control system. These systems usually take less time to fit and require far less drilling and cabling. Town and Country Security are specialists in Wirefree security having fitted many Systems, they are especially useful in converted barns or where there are wooden floors and cables cannot be easily hidden.  Hard Wired alarm systems are slightly cheaper but take longer – around a day or two – to install. CCTV Systems are also becoming popular as prices become more affordable and can greatly increase protection around your home or business, they also provide evidence to assist a conviction.
